Castra Rubra

Castra Rubra is situated in Kolarovo village close to Harmanly ( South east corner of Bulgaria).

"Castra Rubra" means " The red castle" which was found from the Bulgarian archeologist not long time ago. Actually, 15centuries ago at that location there have been a mythical byzantine castle  on very key position for its time. For the first time the excavations show that there have been living together different ethnicities. The Castra Rubra had been situated on the anciant road Via Diagonalis who had connected Europe with Aisa with significant economical importance.

This winery is a jewel,  an enormous passion turned into modern working winery of highest level. It's wines are not only the pride of their makers but we dare say that they are the new face of the Bulgarian winemaking. The person who creates these wines and guides the team of young oenologists of Castra Rubra Winery is Michel Rolland, the most significant representative of the contemporary wine world.

Michel Rolland is not only the exclusive consultant of the winery but he is also the guru of all modern-thinking winemakers. It ishonor to have him as a member of Castra Rubra team and we believe that this is a privilege for the Bulgarian wine as a whole.

Three young and talented oenologists work constantly at Castra Rubra Winery. These are Plamena Kostova, Todor Katzarov and Anton Dimitrov. Enthusiastic and ambitious, they are the new hope of the Bulgarian wine. We should also mention with gratitude the name of the manager Tzvetan Georgiev who takes care of everything in Castra Rubra and its vineyards.

Today the winery has 200hka vineyards of Cabernet Sauvignon,Merlot, Alicant Bouschet, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Francs, Sauvignon Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Syrah, petit Verdot and of course the indigenious Bulgarian grape varieties- Rubin and Mavrud.
