Arneis, once called 'White Barollo', is the 'returning prodigal son of Piedmont' - it was on the brink of extinction in the 1970s but, thanks to a handful of enthusiastic winemakers, has made an impressive recovery.
Arneis is a white Italian wine grape variety originating only in Piedmont, Italy. It is most commonly found in the rolling hills of the Roero, northwest of Alba, where it is part of the white wines with the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG), a designation of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin. It can also be used to produce DOC-controlled wines in the neighbouring area, Langhe, because the best vineyards are only found in Roero. Arneis (literally: little rascal, in Piedmontese) is so called because it is considered a rather difficult grape to grow. It is a fresh and floral variety and has been grown for centuries in the region. White wines produced from Arneis are usually dry, refreshing, full-bodied with hints of pear and apricot.
