Fiano is one of the oldest classic varieties of Southern Italy. There are documents that show that the ancient Romans certainly cultivated the grape. It is likely that the ancient Greeks also cultivated it and they may have first brought it to Italy. The well-known wine historian and critic, Janice Robinson, identifies the grape variety as the one used to make the Apianum wine that the Romans loved so much.
